Hundreds Flock to Avon River for the Seventh Annual Great Canterbury Duck Race The banks of the Avon River came alive on Sunday as hundreds gathered to cheer on their favorite ducks in the seventh annual More FM Canterbury Duck Race. This fun-filled event raised much-needed funds for the ‘Healthy Harold’ program, which supports Canterbury schoolchildren in developing essential life skills. This year, Life Education Trust Canterbury was honored to welcome the Minister of Mental Health, Matt Doocey MP, who attended to show his support for this meaningful cause. His presence underscored the importance of mental well-being and life skills education for young people, highlighting the event’s wider significance in building a resilient and healthy community for the future. The event featured over 80 business-sponsored ducks, each decorated and vying for the title of the fastest duck on the water and the coveted prize of Best Dressed Duck. The winners of the Business Race, supported by Godfreys Law, included: 1st Place: Odd Job Johnny 2nd Place: Ashton Wheelans Limited 3rd Place: Apex Accountancy Limited Best Dressed Duck: The Washdown King NZ The next race was the Community Race, where individuals entered smaller ducks to race down the river for a chance to win great prizes. This year, we had approximately 400 entries—a fantastic sight as the ducks bobbed, bashed, and floated their way from the Bridge of Remembrance to the finish line at the Hereford St Bridge. In the Community Race, top honors went to: 1st Place: Joshua M 2nd Place: Liz T 3rd Place: Henry Y Spot prizes were awarded to Finn B, Paula H, Fiona P, Amy G, Buzz, and Yiding X. This year, we also awarded a prize to the school with the highest number of entries, with Lyttelton School taking the win. They received a fantastic prize package, including $500 worth of books for their school library and a visit from our much-loved giraffe, Harold. Life Education Trust Canterbury extends a heartfelt thanks to all sponsors, participants, and community members who came together to make this event a success. With the funds raised, we look forward to reaching even more children across Canterbury, empowering them with the skills they need for a bright future. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year’s event!
